It doesn’t matter how long you’ve lived in Steamboat or how many times you’ve visited, the return of the vibrant golds, oranges and reds of the fall foliage never cease to amaze and delight. There is truly nothing like it. With fall just around the corner, the morning air becomes a little more crisp, the evening dusk comes a little sooner, and the cool breeze signals a change in season. While many want to hold on to the waning days of summer, Mother Nature generously offers up a spectacular show of color to help ease us through the transition from summer to fall and then on to winter. Make sure to set some time aside in late September to get outside and enjoy the show. The peak of the fall colors usually arrives around September 25, and the brightest fall colors come after a wet late-summer followed by a dry, sunny autumn with cool, frost-free nights.
There are many ways to enjoy the awe-inspiring colors of autumn in the high country. Take a drive up Buffalo Pass or Rabbit Ears Pass. Hike up Emerald Mountain for panoramic vistas of the surrounding valley. Take a bike ride along Spring Creek Trail to be immersed in a sea of golden aspen leaves. Hop on the Gondola for a sunset happy hour or a hike on Thunderhead Trail, which takes you through aspen groves and offers stunning scenic vistas. Get outside and enjoy the show, and don’t forget your camera!
