When it comes to decorating a home, it’s easy to get lost and feel like you don’t know where to start. This can turn into trying to do too much and cluttering a space. We’ve rounded up common decorating “mistakes” and recommended solutions to make your home look and feel good.
A CLUTTERED KITCHEN
Many of us find ourselves wanting to buy the hot, new gadget on the market. An air fryer, a nugget ice maker, a Ninja Foodie, etc. Sure, all of those things are great, but when you have limited kitchen space, these things amass on countertops which can lead to a messy feeling. Beyond the vast number of appliances, you’ve also got artwork, plants, and other small decor pieces which really adds to the clutter. Instead, when it’s time to get a new small appliance, first try to weed out what you maybe aren’t using anymore and decide what you really need. Also, look on the market for appliances that do multiple things rather than having several items that do one task to limit the number of objects you have to find space to store. Lastly, skip the tchotchkes you don’t really need on the countertops – just stick with a small houseplant or a vase of flowers and keep the surface areas as clear as you can.
KIDS TOYS
If you have children, you know they come with a lot of stuff. Toys can easily take over a room if you’re not careful, and finding ways to store their things rather than letting toys create a pile that feels like you have to swim through it in the living room is so important. Find chic baskets, storage bins, or even pieces like a storage ottoman or piece of furniture is a great way to keep their things put away and organized. Not to mention it’s a great way to teach them how to tidy up after themselves!
DATED HARDWARE
One of the simplest and least expensive ways to get a new look and feel is to update your hardware. Replacing old knobs, drawer pulls, and cabinet hardware. Finding something modern that also fits your decor theme for the space will completely elevate the look and give the room a fresh new take without having to do much work.
AVOID MATCHY MATCHY
Trying too hard to match everything in a room from the paint color to furniture, decor, and accessories creates a feeling of trying a bit too hard. Instead, create a space that looks and feels more lived-in. Make sure to add pieces and accents that capture your eye and add interest, yet feels warm and inviting.
