Living in South Routt County

South Routt County is located in one of the more picturesque parts of Colorado. Also known as “Upper Yampa Valley”, the Yampa River flows in its infancy from the headwaters high in the Flat Tops Wilderness Area. The Flattops – an aptly named mountain range visible from most parts of the valley- offer year-round recreational opportunities. South Routt consists of 4 separate communities as well as a diverse mix large ranches and recreational acreage. Immigrants from around the world worked the coal mines in South Routt from the early 1900s. Mining success brought the railroad to nearby Phippsburg, and the rail line continued through Oak Creek. Gatway to the famed Flat tops Mountains and the Flat Tops Trail Scenic Byway, the town of Yampa began as a hunting camp in the 1880s. Freight wagons and stagecoaches were prominent in town. The Egeria Park region encompasses the town of Yampa, and the community of Toponas to the south. A visit here will take you back in time to a slower paced way of life that endures today as ranching and agriculture continues to be our mainstays.
