Steamboat Sotheby’s International Realty isn’t just passionate about homes – we’re committed to the beauty of our broader community. This commitment is exemplified in a unique tradition that spans years and is rooted in dedication.

The history of this highway clean-up initiative traces back to Doug Labor, ABR, ABRM, CEBA, CRS, ePRO, GRI, RRP, who began his journey in the real estate world by establishing Buyer’s Resource Real Estate of Steamboat in 2000. By August of 2012, his connection to Steamboat Springs led him to sign the Highway Adoption Agreement with the Colorado Department of Transportation (Adopt-A-Highway). This agreement mandated the cleanup of the stretch from milepost 67 to 68 along Highway 131 at least twice a year.

Why this particular stretch? Doug explains, “It’s strategically placed right in the heart of the Yampa Valley. It witnesses some of the highest traffic entering and exiting Steamboat Springs, making it a symbolic ‘front door’ to our town. Additionally, it’s a haven for biking enthusiasts and offers views of some of the most breathtaking properties in Northwest Colorado.”

2015 marked a pivotal year in Doug’s career. He transitioned his real estate license to Steamboat Sotheby’s International Realty and entered into an eight-year lease with them for his downtown real estate building. In a gesture of community spirit and partnership, he extended the use of his Adopt-A-Highway agreement to the firm.

The clean-up sessions over the years have been nothing short of eventful. “Our finds range from golf balls and coins to jewelry and even a student driver sticker. But the regulars? Those are the miniature bottles of alcohol, often discovered empty,” recalls Doug with a hint of amusement.

Every cleanup session wraps with the tight-knit team of Steamboat Sotheby’s International Realty congregating, trading stories, and enjoying each other’s company at the Patio Grill at Haymaker Golf Course.

For us at Steamboat Sotheby’s International Realty, this tradition symbolizes more than just highway cleanup. It’s about community, legacy, and the unwavering dedication to preserving the beauty of Steamboat Springs.
