Our Blog

From not washing your favorite teams jersey in the season, to knocking on wood and stepping over cracks- chances are, you’ve participated in a superstition or ritual before. Dating back to early civilization, rituals have long been held as ways to improve the odds of a favorable outcome with our behavior and beliefs. With the ski mountain in mind, you may wonder ways to increase the odds of that dreamy powder day. Here are 6 rituals for you to try this season.

Wash your Car

Murphy’s Law- the moment you switch lanes for a quicker ride, the lane you just left is bound to speed up. We’ve all been there- but is it possible this applies to having a freshly washed car as well? If you want to bring on the snow, try going through the car wash to invite mother nature to redecorate it with some slush!

Ski Map in the Freezer

Push those frozen peas aside- this snow day ritual requires room for a frozen ski trail map. Similar to the tried-and-true superstition of flushing an ice cube down the toilet, relying on cold matter to bring moisture seems like a worthy ploy. Grab a trail map of your favorite mountain and give this one a try!

Snow Dance

Originating from the Ute Tribe, (The first people to call Steamboat home,) the snow dance is one you likely tried yourself as a kid. While this tradition is looked at as a fun superstition, its success has been documented as recently as 2012, when members of the Ute Tribe gathered in Vail, Colorado. The tribe performed the ritual hoping to bring snow to the area, and as they danced, snow fall increased beyond expected amounts.

Don’t Jinx It

Shhh! Before you mention that big storm coming our way, think again. Some locals have superstitions that talking about the storm can keep those snow clouds away. Same goes for putting on your snow tires too early in the season. While safety comes first, you wouldn’t want to be the one to take that powder away from the rest of us!

Coins on the Windowsill

A penny saved is a powder day earned! In this age-old superstition, every penny you stack is believed to bring a whole inch of snow. Some believe that this ritual is an offering to Jack Frost himself. If you don’t have pennies to stack, taping quarters to your window is a possibility as well.

Pray for Snow

When all else fails, start wishing! We all dream of waking up to the news of magical powder, and hey, it’s worth a shot.
